BookCasePress and BABE2017

I am really delighted to announce that myself and Noriko Suzuki Bosco have set up an independent small pubishing press, BookCasePress. We aim to use the book form to investigate different ways of making and sharing our collaborative practice by creating a portable library. We will be launching a series of events in the near future, but in the meantime please visit our website, or come and see us in person at at BABE 2017, Bristol Artists Book Event. Saturday 01 April 2017 to Sunday 02 April 2017, 11:00 to 18:00 (Closes at 5pm on Sunday)

This will be the sixth biennial festival of artist book making, featuring the work of bookmakers and small presses from around the world. Since 2007, BABE has established a great reputation as a relaxed and friendly event to meet and chat to book artists about their work and buy works of art. There will be more than 80 makers taking part, performances, interventions, talks and workshops across the weekend. Artists are from all over the UK, Ireland, The Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Norway and South Korea:.

You can find BookCasePress on the ground floor. We will have a selection of our books as well as being part of the passport scheme and running a workshop on Saturday afternoon. Details are on the Arnolfini website.

'Domestic Notes' artist book at 23 Sandy Gallery, Portland, Oregan, USA

I am really thrilled to have been selected to show my work, 'Domestic Notes' at '23 Sandy Gallery', Portland, Oregan, as part of their 10th anniversary exhibition, 'Built'.

McCall's MultiBlue Artist Book

Having worked collaboratively for some time with the artist and spatial interior designer, Belinda Mitchell, we have been produced an artists' book and associated works in response to Wymering Manor, the oldest timber building in Portsmouth. Working with the book form and using an embodied way of working, we have created "McCall's MultiBlue' a book rich in texture, concept and narrative, which is currently on view at The Cupola Gallery 'Perception' exhibition in Sheffield.  Our ongoing developmental work is on view at The Link Gallery in Winchester, as part of the International Women's Day exhibition.

tiny library, artist book

artist book, 'haptic narrative' completed for the tiny library project, reusing cassette carry cases for the purpose of housing and distributing collections of handmade booklets, zines and mix-tapes of varied topics. Tiny Libraries are posted and placed around Europe, in alternative, sustainable communities, festivals and gallery spaces, to serve as a social, artistic and cultural exchange for aiding cross-pollination within creative subcultures.

Based primarily upon the ideas of Psychogeography (an approach to geography that emphasizes playfulness and "drifting") and Upāya (a Buddhist method of pedagogy translating to 'expedient means'), Tiny Library will look to create a community of exchange between creatives to exemplify the social function of creating art and music.

Sketchbook Project 2016

The Sketchbook Project is a really lovely organisation that offers artists the opportunity to have their work archived at Brooklyn Library NY and then to be taken on a tour to the major libraries in the US.  The idea is to show the work in progress that takes place behind the scenes. This is a yearly event and anyone can sign up.

publications

Very happy that some of my artist's books are in a new publication 'In praise of beautiful books' edited by Caroline Mornement (twitter link) and The Artist's Yearbook Book 2016 - 2017. (UWE). Both are available from selected booksellers or online.

Andover Exchange Postcards

As part of the Andover 'Exchange' Project, where local people were invited to leave their positive visual and written responses regarding their locality, Test Valley Borough Council commissioned me to create artworks that could be used for a variety of outcomes, such as bunting and postcards. The bunting is up and the postcards are now for sale!

Aspex Gallery Workshop

I had the great pleasure of working with artist Adrian Mundy at Aspex Gallery recently. Adrian's exhibition 'Natural Imperfections'  has been on show at Aspex and is the culmination of 2 years hard work, growing flax and using the harvest to create artworks.  Adrain is a sufferer of ME and agoraphobia, his work is not only political and philosophical but also serves as a journey to overcome his illnesses. In response to his work, I facilitated a workshop teaching adults how to make artist books, using simple materials and constructions, that reflects both our philosophies of using observation and available resources as a means of creating something beautiful and considered.

recent workshops

I've been running quite a few workshops recently in and around Hampshire. Working with Winnal Primary School year 5 pupils,  was lovely and considering it was their last day of the summer term, very relaxing. The aim was to create paper cuts in response to the children's still life drawings. This particular project was commissioned by Nicola Henshaw, a new forest artist working in wood, who has is creating a regency inspired carved seat for the Jane Austen centenary. She'll be using the paper cuts to inform her designs and the bench should be installed later this year in The Water Meadows, Winchester.

I am showing my work as part of the 2015 Platform Projects @ Art Athina.

 4 - 7 June 2015.

For the 2015 Platform Projects @ Art Athina, LUBOMIROV-EASTON invited a large number of international artists to send a letter to Greece. The only restriction on artwork was that it must fit inside an A5 envelope – a size which represents a single fold in the standard A4 letter size. Rooted in a tradition of postcard shows, such as the annual ‘Secrets’ at the Royal College, as well as referencing mail art and the New York Correspondence School, this format has the advantage not only of simplifying freight, but crucially of allowing a larger number of artists to be shown together. Thus the show was conceived as a kind of communal artwork, a joint letter from one community of artists to another, to be assembled on site from hundreds of individual pieces. It is the nature of Platform Projects, as a gathering of international artist-led organisations, which are each other’s audience as much as the visitors to the fair, that made this form of address to other artist communities possible.

The participating artists had complete freedom to interpret the 148x210 mm envelope space and there are no restrictions made on contents: whether the work is a postcard, a letter, or poster; whether painting, drawing, or sculpture; any object was allowed, including digital media such as a CD, DVD, or memory stick, or anything else that could be mailed and survive the postal journey there and back. There were no thematic restrictions either, and the resulting collection was intended as a broad snapshot of practices and ideas. It is then the role of the curator and the viewer to search out signs of a common language, which may perhaps exist, or be perceived to exist.

exhibition

The bursary awarded to me as part of the '7x7 project', has acted as a catalyst with regards to thinking about wider processes and ideologies.  It has enabled me to further my experimental explorations surrounding making site-responsive work using a diverse crafting language. Continuing to 'unpack' and explore an earlier project concerned with investigating relationships to a particular place, has resulted in a series of limited edition artist's books and prints.  These will exhibited along with the other 6 artist's involved in the project, at 'Making Space' on 16 & 17 May 2015.
