10 days, winchester, 'silent conversations'

This week I went down to Portsmouth university to learn how to digitise my work and translate it into laser cuts.  Complicated at first, learning new software always is, however the method is relatively simple; giving a clean, crisp and reliable finish. how boring! As fascinating as it is watching the technology working the outcome leaves me unnourished. The capability to endlessly reproduce with such precision takes away the mark and character of the work and the human element. It is however an interesting concept regarding ownership, authenticity and craftsmanship.

10 days, winchester, silent conversations

We're now at the stage of layout and selection of our work, which as a representation of our studio,  and as the title implies, is an ongoing conversation.  One which will continue to receive contributions  over the 10 day period.  We have invited guests from different backgrounds and practices, for example, archaeologist, stone mason,  as well as the public to come and have a conversation.

'silent conversation' 20 days across the city exhibition

Our project has been gaining momentum and we've had so many conversations during the making of this work.  Decisions about locations have been challenging and we realised that finding the exact centre of the work and locating compass positions has been quite not as straight forward as we first anticipated.  calibrations, levels, and the fact that the cathedral doesn't have the position we thought it was, has all been very interesting.

To find out more about the lierne ceiling we visited the cathedral stone masons, who work in a wonderful building in 'dome alley'.  It was fantastic to see their processes and to see a ceiling boss in detail.

we've continued with our drawing excavations of the roof area and later in the day decided to 'lift' the edges by cutting along the main compass bearings of north, south, east and west.

10 days creative collisions, silent conversation at winchester cathedral

After spending time in libraries and archives we're now physically positioned in the cathedral and have started our 'silent conversation' by looking and drawing the ceiling above our area in the north nave. we will be developing our ongoing work, creating a 3d drawing of the ceiling as part of the '10 days across the city' exhibition. The first few days have gone well, it's even been quite warm and we've had a very good reception from the cathedral staff and visitors.  Our tools have included rulers, pens and pencils alongside lasers, cameras, bodkins, mirrors and string.
